Women have 150 different HAIRSTYLES in their lifetimes

The average woman will work her way through 150 different hairstyles in a lifetime, a study revealed today.

Researchers found the typical female will have her hair cut into a different style twice, and try at least one different colour, each year between the ages of 15 and 65.

And the main reasons for changing styles are simply getting bored with their current look, seeing a celebrity with a cut or colour they like, or going through a big life change.

It also emerged women will experiment with around 100 different shades of colour over the years.

Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, Global Creative Director for Toni&Guy, which commissioned the research to mark its 50th anniversary, said: ”It’s great to see that most women will experiment with their hair during their life, rather than stick the same tried and tested look.

”A new hairstyle or colour can be a great way to brighten up your appearance or even celebrate a big life change or milestone event.

”If you like being the centre of attention and keeping up with the latest trends, nothing does this more than a radical cut or colour.

”And if you aren’t brave enough to go for a completely different look, just going for a slightly lighter or darker shade than usual, or chopping more off the ends, can still have the same effect.”

The study, of 2,000 women revealed that in an average year, there will be five visits to the hairdressers – a total of 250 between the ages of 15 and 65.

And during those trips, women will go for a completely different colour once every year or fifty times in total.

On top of that, they will also work their way through around two different cuts or styles each year – around 100 over the 50 year period.

More than one in twenty even admitted they always try and go for something different every time they go to the hairdressers, while another 47 cent will experiment with something a little different to their norm.

It also emerged 64 per cent of women change their hair cut or style simply because they are bored with their old one, while 12 per cent copy a look after seeing it on a celebrity.

Fifteen per cent have got a new style or colour for their wedding, while another 13 per cent have changed their locks after having a baby.

A milestone birthday, before giving birth and graduating university were also among the big life events which have led to a new hairstyle.

Other popular reasons for a change of style include going through a relationship break-up and liking the attention that a new look brings.

Researchers also found that almost half of women are easily bored when it comes to their hair, and another 47 per cent like to be experimental when it comes to their locks.

More than one in twenty even say they have never gone more than a month with the same style, while 35 go for a different cut or colour at least once every six months.

But at the other end of the scale, 15 per cent have stuck with the same look for five years with a further 14 per cent admitting it has been a decade or more since they last had a different style.

Almost a third have even changed their hairstyle after just a few days because they didn’t like how it had been done.

Toni&Guy’s Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck added: ”Colour is an important part of the final look as no cut is ever complete without colour to enhance the overall effect.”

Between the ages of 15-65, women will:
Visit the hairdressers 250 times (five each year)
Change their hair colour 50 times (once a year)
Dye their hair 100 different shades (two a year)
Have 100 different hairstyles (two a year)

Top reasons for changing a style or colour
1.      I’m bored with my current look
2.      Seeing a celebrity style I like
3.      I was going through a big life change
4.      The end of a relationship
5.      I enjoy the attention that a new style or colour brings
