A student has been elected to America’s House of Representatives after running a campaign from his British university dorm – with the help of his mum.
Nicholas Schwaderer, 24, wooed US voters by pledging to slash taxes, uphold freedoms and alleviate student debt – all while based at Plymouth University in Devon.
He ran the campaign, election interviews and transatlantic debates while juggling a law and business degree.
But with the help of a campaign staff consisting of just his mother and a couple of uni friends he was able to secure a seat in Montana’s House of Representatives
He was sworn in this week as the Republican representative for the state’s District 14, covering three counties and a Native American reservation.
Nicholas, who is from Montana, said: ”As soon as you file, you are suddenly under public scrutiny and the reporters want to speak to you to find out who you are.
“With the time difference, it meant a lot of late and through-the-night interviews, while at the same time I was juggling the demands of my degree.”
Nicholas has now returned to Montana as a state representative – after sealing his bachelors degree with a 2:1.
He said: ”I cannot say enough about Plymouth, Britain, and education in general. I was a die-hard Plymouth Argyle fan by the end.”
