Rare Victorian £5 coin set to sell for £15,000 at auction

A rare Victorian £5 coin is set to fetch up to £15,000 at auction.

The 1839 gold coin shows a young Queen Victoria in the guise of classical figure Una leading the British Lion.

It was designed by William Wyon to commemorate the beginning of Queen Victoria’s reign and is one of only 400 minted.

Jeff Day of Lawrence Fine Art Auctioneers in Crewkerne, Somerset, which is selling the coin, described it as “very rare.”

He added: “Gold coins continue to do very well at auction, with many collectors and investors keen to add their collections.

“Gold remains one of the most reassuring commodities in a changeable market such as this.”

The coin, which is being sold by an anonymous vendor, features in a sale of rare coins and medals being auctioned on May 23-24.
