A former RAF aircraft engineer has been named as Britain’s most drunk driver after he crashed his car while almost SIX times over the legal drink drive limit.
Boozy Murtagh Langton, 57, downed half a bottle of vodka with his lunch before driving home from his work at an RAF base.
He slammed his Volkswagen Golf into the side of another car and drove off before police found him being treated for minor injuries by paramedics.
After failing a roadside test he was taken to a police station where he produced breath-test readings of 188mg and 194mg in 100ml of breath.
Langton was at least 5.37 times over the legal limit of 35mg and eclipses Britain’s previous highest reading of 191mg.
He was banned from driving for three years after admitting drink driving and failing to stop after an accident Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court, Suffolk.
David Shipman, defending, said: ”He is of previous exemplary character and has been an aircraft engineer for a number of years. He drinks when he becomes anxious but it is not excessive.
”On this occasion it is quite clear to see that he had drunk half a bottle of vodka in a short space of time, which he did so on impulse, and that has had disastrous consequences.
”He has already had some counselling and is continuing to seek help.”
The court heard Langton crashed at 3.50pm on July 14 this year while returning to his home in Barton Mills, Suffolk, after finishing work at RAF Wattisham.
Langton admitted in police interview that he had no recollection of what happened after he drank the vodka.
He lost his job as an RAF aircraft engineer, which he had started just three days before, as a result of the incident.
In addition to the three year driving ban, Langton was given an 18 month community order to include attendance at an alcohol treatment and drink-impaired drivers’ programme.
He was also ordered to pay £85 towards court costs.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Police yesterday confirmed Langton gave two readings of 188mg and 194mg following his arrest.
* Britain’s previous drunkest driver was Pole Marcin Ziebac, 29, who gave readings of 191mg and 187mg after he downed 15 pints of lager at a Christmas party before he was stopped in Berkswell, Coventry.
