Cross-dressing TV presenter Paul O’Grady had a university graduation ceremony in stitches today with an hilarious speech after picking up an honorary degree.
Comedian Paul, 55, who shot to fame with his alter ego Lily Savage, was made a Doctor of Arts at De Montfort University in Leicester.
He was given the title in recognition of his ”intellectual, cultural and professional distinction”.
O’Grady, who quit his Channel 4 chat show in December, cracked a series of cheeky gags in his acceptance speech.
He said: ”This is where proceedings go downhill. I’ve been asked to give you all some advice, but I’m not sure I should be a role model – more a warning.
”I never went to college or university. In fact, I never really went to school.
”I was a graduate of the Vauxhall Tavern of performing arts where I picked up a few things – but thank god for antibiotics.
”The only advice I will give you is never ever, ever mix Pernod and cider, it might look pretty but you will regret it all week.
”And in the words of Lily Savage, may the gods protect you, but just in case, always carry a brick in your handbag.”
Paul O’Grady will be returning with Lily Savage in December, when he performs a series of pantomimes.
