Hollywood actor and director Mel Gibson has avoided injury after crashing his Maserati into a rocky hillside.
The controversial film star was driving his Maserati Quattroporte through Malibu on Sunday night when he crashed the £80,000 saloon (similar to the model pictured).
According to the police report, Gibson exited a tunnel in the posh part of California when, “for unknown reasons”, he steered his car to the right and struck the rock hillside.
Police arrived at the scene and questioned the 54-year-old who gave the authorities a statement before being picked up and driven home by an unnamed friend.
His powerful Maserati, which is capable of 175mph, suffered front bumper damage with the passenger’s front tyre and wheel smashed up. It was towed away from the scene.
California Highway Patrol public information officer Leland Tang told TMZ: “Gibson told officers in the field he did not know how the car drifted out of the lane and into the hillside.
“It was totally an unintentional act.”
Gibson has had his fair share of run-ins with the CHP, having been stopped by police in July 2006 on the Pacific Host Highway in Malibu on suspicion of speeding.
He was under the influence of alcohol with it later emerging he’d made a string of anti-Semitic and sexist remarks. He was given three years probation after entering a no contest plea to the charge of drunken driving.
