A red-faced man has been ordered to wear an electronic tag – after he wrecked his gran’s mobility car.
Ben Harvey, 30, took the keys to the £8,000 Vauxhall Corsa which was specially designed to cater for his wheelchair bound gran.
But he smashed the motor after he took it without her knowledge so he could make it to the shops before they closed on Saturday, August 24 last year.
Harvey’s family initially reported the car stolen after it was found abandoned the next morning in West Pinchbeck, Lincs.
But Harvey confessed to taking the car behind his gran’s back and was arrested.
Last Thursday Harvey admitted aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and without a licence, when he appeared at Spalding Magistrates Court.
He was slapped with an electronic tag and ordered to remain at his home in Spalding, Lincs., between 7pm and 7am every day for four months.
Harvey was also banned from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay £85 costs.
Prosecutor Rebecca Ritson, told the court his gran pressed charges “with great reluctance” but said it was the only way the insurers would pay for a replacement car.
Carrie Simson, defending, said: “He deeply regrets it and he is sorry for the upset that he’s caused both his grandmother and his mother.”
