A victim of evil paedophile Jimmy Savile spoke of her shock today as the full extent of the twisted TV presenter’s “unprecedented” 50-year reign of terror was made public.
Wheelchair-bound Caroline Moore, 54, was recovering from an operation on her spine in the children’s ward at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Bucks, in 1971, when Savile stuck his tongue down her throat in a corridor.
The schoolgirl, just 13 at the time, was left shaken by the assault but said she was too scared to tell the authorities.
But after 40 years of silence Caroline, of Clarkston, East Renfrewshire, Scotland, spoke out when other allegations of sexual abuse emerged following a television documentary.
Scotland Yard has now apologised for missing several opportunities to catch Savile after the ‘Giving Victims a Voice’ report revealed that 214 crimes were recorded against Savile across 28 police force areas, including 34 of rape or penetration.
The report, led by the Met Police and NSPCC, outlined offences at 13 hospitals, including Great Ormond Street in London and Wheatfields Hospice in Leeds.
Mother-of-two Caroline said: “I’m absolutely shocked that it has been going on for this long and that there are so many victims.
“It’s scary that so many people knew and yet said nothing.
“There are still so many unanswered questions. I can’t believe that he was allowed into the places that he was.
“The authorities need to get their act together and make sure nothing like this can happen in the future.
“A lot of people should be ashamed of themselves.”
The report shows the finds of Scotland Yard’s Operation Yewtree, which was launched three months ago.
The 30-page document expanded on allegations that Savile was a prolific sex offender whose abuse took place at a number of institutions identified by victims.
Caroline, has been paralysed from the chest down, added: “I find the whole thing terrifying.
“You don’t think about people high up in society such as presenters and celebrities carrying out such attacks.
“But the fact that Jimmy Savile was respected meant he was actually more dangerous.
“I’m quite a strong person but the extent of what he did scares me.”
Savile, who was knighted in 1990. was a BBC Radio 1 DJ as well as a presenter of Top Of The Pops and Jim’ll Fix It on the BBC.
He died in October 201, aged 84.
The report’s findings include: Savile offended at 13 hospitals, including Great Ormond Street, and one offence was recorded at Wheatfields Hospice in 1977.
His youngest victim was an eight-year-old boy, and the oldest was 47.
The earliest allegation is from 1955 in Manchester and the last from 2009.
Offences were carried out at the BBC between 1965 and 2006, including at the last Top of the Pops recording.
Peak offending took place between 1966 and 1976.
Some 73 per cent of victims were under 18 and most were aged 13 to 16.
There is “no clear evidence” he operated in paedophile ring, although “whether he was part of an informal network” is still being investigated.
The report also revealed 16 offences were committed at Leeds General Infirmary between 1965-1995 and 22 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital between 1965-88.
And one offence was committed at Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital, St James Leeds Hospital, High Royds Psychiatric Hospital, Dewsbury Hospital, Wycombe General Hospital, Great Ormond Street Hospital in 1971, Ashworth Hospital, Exeter Hospital, Royal Portsmouth Hospital, St Catherine’s Hospital in Birkenhead, and Saxondale Mental Health.
The Crown Prosecution Service also published a review of a decision in 2009 not to charge Savile with sexual offences in relation to four complaints made to police in Surrey and Sussex.
Caroline has been unable to walk since she was in a car accident when she was 20 months old.
She had been sent to Stoke Mandeville Hospital’s spinal injuries unit following an operation to fuse the bone after being diagnosed with curvature of the spine.
The schoolgirl was sitting alone in her wheelchair in a doorway at the hospital when Savile approached in silence.
She said she was expecting a “peck on the cheek” but instead Savile molested her.
Caroline shuddered: “It was a horrible experience. I was sitting alone outside the doorway in my wheelchair. I was quite shy and lonely.
“I don’t remember him saying anything to me but he leant down and I was excited because I thought he was going to give me a wee peck on the cheek.
“But he took my face in his hands and rammed his tongue down my throat.
“I was shocked. I had never been kissed and I didn’t really know what had happened – only that it made me absolutely shudder. I can still see his face – it has haunted me to this day.”
