Pub chain JD Wetherspoon is feeling flush this morning after picking picking up the overall Loo of the Year award for its impeccable toilets.

They also managed to sweep the board in the individual pubs and wine bars category, winning all four available awards for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The individual awards went to the Looking Glass, Warrington; the Alexander Graham Bell, Edinburgh; the Pontlottyn, Abertillery and the Diamond, Derry.

Originally launched in 1987, the Loo of the Year awards are promoted by the British Toilet Association and aim to encourage “the highest standards in any kind of public toilet.”

There are 60 individual awards and one overall winner. JD Wetherspoon last took the overall title in 2001.

Anyone can nominate a public toilet for an award and they are judged by independent assessors.

Jon Randall, Wetherspoon’s head of property and acquisitions, said: “We are thrilled to have been named the overall winner of the Loo of the Year Awards 2010.

“Our staff maintain their pub toilets to the highest standards at all times and this is reflected in the assessor’s inspections.”
