Football fans were injured after they surged when their team scored a winning goal – causing a wall to collapse, it emerged today.

The cheering supporters all leapt forward when Championship side Reading hit a last minute winner against League Two Torquay United.

But as they celebrated a 20ft concrete wall in the stand at Torquay’s Plainmoor ground collapsed and the fans spilled out onto the pitch.

One Reading fan was hurt when the breeze blocks collapsed and others supporters have been posting pictures of injuries on the internet.

Torquay chairman Simon Baker described it as a ‘freak accident’ and said the Football Association and Torbay Council will investigate.

He said: ”We were very surprised that it happened. Nothing like this has occurred before when we have had bigger crowds in that section of the ground.”

Club’s stadium manager, Rob Stanley, added: ”The wall is designed to give way rather than be the cause of any crush injuries.”
