A dog-walker who trod on ”something hard” in a park found a Second World War grenade.
Stunned Gita Reading, 32, felt the object under her feet when she was out walking her pet pooch.
Her husband Anthony, 28, recognised the classic pineapple-style grenade half buried in the mud and dialled 999.
A bomb disposal team was called to the scene Saturday and safely destroyed the device in a controlled explosion.
Police in Plymouth, Devon, said it had probably remained buried for decades before the recent rains washed away the earth to expose it.
A spokesman said: “All the indications are that this was a Second World War grenade.”
