Liverpool are reportedly preparing to smash their transfer record after offering £35 million for Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll.
The offer comes after Newcastle rejected an earlier bid from Liverpool – rumoured to be £25 or £30 million.
Now The Times has reported Liverpool have upped their bid to a staggering £35 million – a record for a British footballer.
Liverpool’s offer for the 21-year-old surely signals an end to the Anfield career for Fernando Torres who is expected to agree terms with Chelsea in a British transfer record.
If Newcastle accept the offer and Carroll agrees terms, he will line up alongside Luis Suarez in one of the game’s most exciting partnerships.
However, it may have to wait as Carroll is currently injured and Suarez is yet to receive his work permit.
Liverpool are continuing their pursuit of Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam who is expected to leave the seaside club following the signing of Andy Reid from Sunderland.
The prospect of Adam’s set pieces and Carroll’s aerial ability will be a mouthwatering prospect for Liverpool fans hoping Suarez will quickly gel with the Reds’ creative talents Steven Gerrard and Raul Meireles.
