Australian brewery Nail Ale has created what it believes is the world’s most expensive beer: the Antarctic Nail Ale.
The name comes from one of its ingredients, melted Antarctic ice water. Brewery owner John Stallward claims the water makes his beer the purest in the world.
Stallward’s brother-in-law, who is a member of Sea Shepherds, an Antarctic conservation organisation, gathered the ice and melted it at a port before transporting it to Stallward’s hometown of perth. Stallward then brewed a 20 litre batch of his signature Nail Ale from the water.
Bottles of the beer are being auctioned off to raise money for the Sea Shepherds. The first bottle sold for AUS$800 and the second almost double that at AUS$1850 (roughly £1200).
Scottish brewers Brew Dog claimed earlier this year to have produced the world’s most expensive beer with their End of History range. The bottles, which were encased in dead animals, sold for £500 each.
