A British woman has broken the world record for the largest ever cheese sculpture after carving a half-ton replica of the Queen’s Coronation crown – out of cheddar.
Cordon Bleu chef Tanys Pullin, 46, spent over 100 hours sculpting 600kg of Farmhouse Cheddar to mark the 57th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.
She worked in a cold storage room to protect the structure of the crown, which smashed the previous world record by over 200kg, when it weighed in at 500.4kg.
Mother-of-four Tanys, from Wells, Somerset, who also makes wedding cakes out of cheese, said she is ”very relieved” to have broken the record.
She said: ”I’m a total cheese-aholic. I live and breathe cheese because I work with it everyday.
”I’m just so relieved to have beaten the record because I was very nervous when I loaded the sculpture onto the lorry this morning.
”All my good work could have been undone if it had broken but thankfully it arrived in one piece.
”The cheese definitely won’t be wasted now and after the show we will put it back into the food chain somehow – although I don’t think it will be safe to eat.
”My plans for the future is to keep expanding my cheese wedding cake business by making more weird and wonderful creations.”
The previous Guinness World Record for the largest cheese sculpture was 290kg, set in the USA in 2008, with a carving of the Independence Day Treaty.
Tanys’ sculpture almost doubled the previous record when it was unveiled at 10am on Wednesday at the Royal Bath and West Show in Somerset.
Her crown, which was painstakingly carved with the words ”long live the queen, june 2nd 1953”, measures 1m in diameter and stands over 1.2m tall.
Guinness rules state that sculptures must be carved from a single piece of cheese and cannot be supported by an internal sculpture.
