A woman has been found dead after a suspected hit and run on the edge of a town centre.
A passing motorist raised the alarm around 11pm on Sunday night when he saw a body lying in the road on the outskirts of Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire.
The woman had suffered extensive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene on the A3102 between the town and Swindon.
The road was closed for eight hours while the Wiltshire Police Serious Collision Investigation Team examined the scene.
Police said the woman may have been mowed down by a hit and run killer who had failed to stop.
The woman, who has not yet been identified, was being white, aged between 25-45 with short ginger hair.
She was wearing blue jeans, a khaki coloured jacket and light coloured training shoes.
