A two-year-old girl who died after being knocked down outside a religious convention in front of her parents was named today (Tue) as Evelyn Maria Celgy.
The tragic tot was being taken to a service of thanks with her parents when she was struck down by a red Nissan Qashqai at 8am on Saturday (11/7).
The collision happened as her parents walked to a Sehion UK Catholic bible convention at the Capital FM Arena in Bolero Square, Nottingham.
Evelyn was rushed to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham but died shortly after arriving.
Her family, from Crewe, were today (Tue) said to be “devastated.”
Family friend Tom Adiyta was at the event.
He said: “It’s heartbreaking. The family is absolutely devastated. They came to pray and give their blessings.
“They have two boys and when the girl came they thought it was [because of] the glory of God.
“I’ve spoken to them and they are so sad, inconsolable. It’s very difficult for them to comprehend.”
A statement from the family issued by Nottinghamshire Police saying: “We would like to pass our sincere thanks to Nottinghamshire Police, the paramedics, A&E staff and staff on the PICU ward at the hospital for all their compassion, sympathy, support and care.
“Special thanks to the hospital chaplain.
“Thank you to the community, our family and friends for all their support.”
Tributes have flooded in on social media for Evelyn, and a special prayer meeting is set to be held for her by Sehion UK tomorrow night (Wed).
Shibu Kurian, from the Sehion UK ministry, met the family to offer condolences.
He said: “It’s difficult to console the family. Our support and prayers are with them and we hope many people will pay their respects.”
Flowers were left at the scene following the incident at 8am on Saturday. A message, written by a nine-year-old, said: “Rest in peace little girl”.
The Capital FM Arena said it would support police with their ongoing investigation.
No arrests have been made.
