A 13-year-old schoolgirl who died after being hit by a tram was playing a deadly game of chicken with her friends, it was claimed today.
Lindsey Marie Inger was flung 15ft into the air after being struck by the 50 tonne tram while dashing in front of it as she messed around with pals on Wednesday evening.
The tragic teenager was rushed to hospital with catastrophic injuries following the collision at 7pm but she was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the tram and her devastated friends were also treated for shock at the scene in Bulwell, Nottingham.
A spokesperson for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to reports that a girl had been in collision with a tram and dispatched two ambulances, two fast response vehicles and a two doctors who volunteered their help.
“She was conveyed to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with serious injuries.”
Yesterday local residents told how the group had been playing the deadly dare game ‘chicken’ moments before the tragedy.
Several of the youths had narrowly cheated death when they sprinted across the lines just inches away from the speeding trams.
A resident of nearby Nottingham Road, who did not want to be named, was out with his girlfriend walking his dog when the incident happened.
He said: “I crossed over and the girl was coming and I heard a massive bang.
“She was about 15 or 16 and she was with three others.”
Another local added: “They had been playing chicken, teenagers are always doing so down there by crossing over the lines and messing around.
“It is so tragic what has happened – it’s a very risky game which went disastrously wrong on this occasion.”
Neil Wood, from Nottingham Express Transit (NET), said: “First and foremost we need to stress that our thoughts and sympathies are with the teenager’s family at this time.
“We have launched our own internal inquiry into the incident and of course are co-operating fully with the police crash investigation team and the rail accident investigation branch.”
Yesterday tributes flooded into a Facebook page set up in the Year 9 pupil’s memory.
Friend Kaine Richards, wrote: “R.I.P beautiful. Gone but never forgotten babey fly high up there hope your looking down on everyone .Everyones missin you and thinking of you.”
Another pal said: “R.I.P Lindsey for ever in our hearts !! Going to miss Your hugs so much !! most of all I’m going to miss you so much R.I.P princess.”
In a statement issued by Ellis Guildford School and Sports College, where Lindsey was a student, headteacher Sally Coulton said: “Staff and pupils at the school deeply shocked by Lindsey’s death and are struggling to come to terms with what has happened.
“Our thoughts and sympathies are with her friends and family at this sad time.”
Nottinghamshire Police have launched an investigation into the death.
Why was she playing chicken in the first place near tram tracks? why are the they investigating the crash, it was her own fault for messing about on the tram tracks with her mates, trying to look cool. And people wonder why kids get killed …

i know this girl and she was not playing chicken she was to smart for that! why does the papers make lies up. the crossing is to dark at night and tram didnt have lights on at all at nightime. we dont even need trams in nottingham and they building more we are not london you know.
