Catherine Atkinson, a Labour candidate standing for the Erewash seat in the general election. A councillor has been accused of making 'offensive' comments on social media by questioning a pregnant parliamentary candidate's ability to become an MP. See NTI story NTINAPPIES. Jon Wright, Conservative councillor for the Hallam Fields ward of Erewash Borough Council, was commenting on a Facebook profile posted by Catherine Atkinson, Labour's candidate for the Erewash seat in the general election. Ms Atkinson, of Ilkeston, had posted a message describing herself as a barrister with a two-year-old son and a husband who served as a soldier in Afghanistan. But Cllr Wright commented on the post, saying: "Funny she never mentioned she was heavily pregnant?" Another page user asked: "And what has that got to do with politics? Are pregnant women all of a sudden incapable of doing anything?" Cllr Wright then added: "I wondered how she would represent the people of Erewash whilst on maternity leave? And if it's no problem why hasn't she mentioned it? She mentioned her 2 year old son? How can a woman who is just about to give birth take on a role as MP?"
