A Qatari footballer has the dubious honour of committing one of games’s most inexplicable misses after he hit the post when it was easier to score.
In the second minute of extra time during a quarter-final clash against Uzbekistan at the Asian Games football tournament, Khalfan Fahad chased after a seemingly innocuous backpass.
But the opposing side’s goalkeeper Timur Juraev committed a howler by overrunning the ball as it entered the penalty box – givng the young midfielder the chance to put his nation ahead.
As the keeper lay helpless on the floor, Fahad closed in on the open goal but instead of tapping the ball into the back of the net with his right foot he goes for glory with the outside of his left – and ends up hitting the post.
To make matters worse Qatar, who were defending champions in the competition, ended up getting knocked with the Uzbeks winning one-nil.
