Since their immaculate ‘misconception’ in 1997 The Pocket Gods have recorded over 40 albums, 20 eps and 30 ‘odd’ singles! Mixing genres at will – Country, Indie, Psyche Rock, Prog and Folk, frontman Mark Christopher Lee who writes all the songs has been heralded a genius by Billboard and by others as the UK’s very own Daniel Johnston.
Discovered by the late John Peel and championed by the likes of DJs Huw Stephens and Tom Robinson, the Pocket Gods also feature in the current Guinness Book of Records alongside Justin Bieber for their 100×30 album, which holds the record for the most tracks on a digital album and was also featured in Billboard, on TV and BBC Radio 5. The new album Jesus and Mary Chain is released to celebrate the bands 20th anniversary of making indie pop records.
The Curse of The Pocket Gods
Rumour has it, there is a curse around the band; Shortly after discovering them, first John Peel and a few years later Tony Wilson of Factory Records both died! More recently the band were managed by ex MTV star Steve Blacknell who had a near fatal asthma attack a few weeks after taking them on!
On a lighter note… The plaudits keep coming… In 2007 the band won the first ever BBC Radio 1 ‘Gods of The Pod’ award having been asked by Huw Stephens to record a podcast on how to record a demo – it was subsequently hailed as classic radio by Radio1.
The Pocket Gods live in a small village outside St.Albans and hail themselves as the 3rd biggest band in the village after 60’s rockers. The Zombies and Dappy. They are also stars of their own Nub TV music show on Sky TV in the UK – where they are the house band and have played with legends such as Joan Armatrading,
Junior Giscombe and even Paul ‘Nu nu nu nu 19’ Hardcastle.
The Jesus and Mary Chain
The new album’s lead track is about the time Mark actually played bass very briefly for the Scottish Indie legends. Other songs reveal a search for truth, love and God in an increasingly baffling fraught and troubled world and deal with the bands never-ending love affair with the paranormal and esoteric matters!
