Red-faced Tesco bosses have apologised after a worker spelled out SHI.T on the petrol station price board.
Stunned motorists alerted staff after spotting the profanity printed on the price panel for Super Unleaded.
The joker, believed to be a disgruntled worker, also spelled out the name JOE where the price for City Diesel fuel should be.
The prankster struck at the petrol station at the Walsgrave branch in Coventry, West Mids., during rush hour on Monday morning.
Hundreds of drivers passed the sign, which was visible for over an hour.
One motorist said: ”I took a double take when I saw the letters spelling SHI.T where the price for Super Unleaded normally is.
”Perhaps a worker is trying to give his opinion of the high petrol prices.”
Tesco yesterday (Thurs) apologised to customers.
A spokesman said: ”This is clearly a childish prank and we apologise to customers for any offence caused.”
One worker at the store added: ”The proverbial has hit the fan with this one.
”Bosses have a good idea who it might be and are studying CCTV to see if they can prove it.
”The only way to change the letters is inside the store so it’s only a matter of time before the culprit is discovered.
”Whoever is responsible will almost certainly be sacked.”
