Supermarket giant Asda has apologised after selling a batch of baby drinks which were more than a YEAR out of date.
Emma Dennehy, 28, bought an apple and raspberry Hipp Organic smoothie from an Asda store in Bridgwater, Somerset.
But after feeding the drink to her ten-month-old daughter Grace, she noticed the bottle’s best before date was January 2009.
She alerted friend Terrie-Anne Frost, who had bought the same smoothie for her nine-month-old son Oliver, and discovered it was also past its use by date.
The pair complained to Asda, which has now apologised for the mistake and removed the out of date item from their shelves.
Emma, from Bridgwater, Somerset, revealed her daughter Grace was left ”ill and crying” by the ”disgusting” product.
She said: ”Grace was up all night feeling ill and crying. I thought she was teething.
”I think it’s disgusting that this baby product could have been left on the shelves for so long. It’s purified fruit, so you can imagine what it was like in a baby’s stomach.”
Terrie-Anne added: ”How many other parents have bought one and given it to their children?
”What if I hadn’t spoken to Emma and given the smoothie to my son? It would have been too late and the damage would already have been done.”
An Asda spokesman said: ”Incidents like this are extremely rare, however we will leave no stone unturned in our investigation as to how this happened in the first place.”
