A stowaway cat has stunned vets after making a 1,300 mile journey from Romania to Suffolk – on its own.
The wandering moggy, called Mimi, was taken to a rescue centre after she was found purring and pawing at the door of a home owner.
Vets then scanned her Microchip to locate her owner and were shocked to discover she was registered as living in Romania.
Mimi was then put into quarantine before being passed into the care of Framlingham and Saxmundham branch of Cats Protection.
The cat’s carers believe she hid in the back of a lorry and crossed five countries across the width of mainland Europe before she arrived in Britain.
Animal experts have ruled out Mimi belonging to immigrants after an extensive poster campaign to try and find her owners in the area popular with migrant workers.
Framlingham is in an area frequently passed through by lorries en route to Eastern Europe.
Irene Mulley who has been looking after Mimi said: “We don’t know how she arrived in Suffolk.
“She may have entered legally, but we have no way of knowing.
“The woman whose house MimI walked into did say she put up posters in Cransford but no one has come forward.
“The quarantine process is now all complete and we need someone to look after her.
“She’s a very small cat, so it’s difficult to say how old she is but we think around five months.
“She sometimes jumps on to your shoulders, so whoever takes her will have to have a lot of patience.”
Gillian Clark who is now looking after Mimi said: “I was absolutely stunned when I found out she had come so far.
“But we just don’t know how she managed to get here – it is an absolute mystery.
“She is a lovely cat and would make an ideal pet. She has been given a clean bill of health and has had all her relevant jabs.
“But is a bit of a worry that animals can just enter the UK so easily.
” The worry is that they carry rabies or other disease that can be brought to the UK.
“Perhaps the government needs to tighten up its loopholes.”
The charity is now appealing for someone to give her a good home.
The owner of this cat in a Lynn Markwell who is trying to get her returned to her!!
Mimi is infact a cat that was adopted by my very good friend Lynn who raised the funds to bring her and other cats including her blind sister to the UK . There is no mystery as to how she got here and she would very much like her cat back ! Lynn lives in the area that the cat was found who is called twilight and has not seen any posters, I hope the cpl do the right thing here and re unite her with her blind sister and family
This cat should be returned to the owner straight away, I am suprised that the CPL did not check with the agency’s that let animals into the country.
When will the cat be returned to it’s owner?
