Sir Michael Lord is considering changing his name to avoid becoming ‘Lord Lord’ after he was appointed a peer, it emerged yesterday.
The 72-year-old worked as MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich for 27 years and was the deputy speaker of the House of Commons for 13 years.
He was honoured for his lifetime of work last week when he was announced as a new member of the House of Lords.
However, he is now meeting with the Garter King-at-Arms, who advises new peers, to discuss changing his identity to avoid confusion.
He said: ”I’m delighted and very honoured to be asked to go to the House of Lords and I’m very much looking forward to being working peer.
”It now transpires that to be ‘Lord Lord’ might be difficult in terms of administration and all sorts of other way.
”It’s been suggested to me to have another name, which is what I am considering, and what I might do.”
