A bungling sex attacker who mugged a student and tried to rape her was caught after he changed her profile picture on a mobile phone app – to a snap of HIMSELF.
Afrasayab Khan, 18, attacked the terrified 19-year-old as she made her way home in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffs., just after midnight on May 27.
A court heard he approached his victim and said “Alright darling” before violently grabbing her throat and demanding she perform a sex act on him.
But the brave teenager managed to struggle free and ran away but only after Khan had escaped with her mobile phone and house keys.
The next day, the Staffordshire University student was in a pub with friends who spotted her profile picture had been changed on the popular social messaging tool WhatsApp.
The victim was stunned when she looked on her friend’s phone to see an image of her attacker staring back up at her.
The dopey robber had changed her WhatsApp profile picture to his own grinning mug shot and was then easily tracked down by police.
Khan, from Hanley, Staffs., was arrested and later pleaded guilty to robbery and committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.
On Tuesday, the teenager was sentenced to three years detention in a young offenders’ institution at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Caging him, Judge David Fletcher said: “The student was making her way home.
“She was restrained and items were removed from her.
“She was told she was going to have to commit a sexual act on you, in the context of you holding her around the throat.
“Luckily for her, she got away.”
Prosecutor Fiona Cortese told the court the student – who cannot be named – was walking home from a pal’s in Shelton, Staffs., when Khan struck.
She said: “The defendant said, ‘Alright darling, you are going to give us your money’.
“She said she did not have any. The defendant told her to empty her pockets. She initially got her keys out and he took those from her.
“Another man with Khan said she must have her mobile phone with her and he searched her pockets and took her mobile.
“Khan got behind her and grabbed her round the neck while the other man searched her jacket pockets.
“The defendant, holding her around the neck, demanded she perform the sex act on him.
“She refused to do so.”
Defending Anis Ali said the teenager was intoxicated when he committed the offences but recognises it would have been a terrifying ordeal for the victim.
