Gretel the giant hairy armadillo at Drusillas. See SWNS story SWFAT: A hairy armadillo has been put on a strict diet and exercise regime after she piled on the pounds over Christmas – and turned into a BALL. The fat hairy armadillo, named Gretel, is struggling to beat the post-Christmas bulge after she gobbled up a bit more than her fair share of treats over the holidays. Armadillos are found in the grasslands, forests and savannahs of South America, but Gretel, who moved to Drusillas Park, East Sussex in February last year, stuffed herself with a wide variety of treats. The mammals, who have a hard shell made up of bone and tough tissue, normally eat a delicious diet of locusts, mealworms, wax worms, eggs, rice and vegetables.
