Ricky Gervais defends himself on Piers Morgan Tonight

The 49-year-old Golden Globe winner appeared on Morgan’s ‘Tonight’ show on CNN to talk about his controversial act – where he targeted Hollywood’s super-sensitive A-listers with a series of sharp put-downs.

Gervais, who is to make a cameo return as David Brent on the US version of The Office, told Morgan that he’d have been letting everyone down by putting on a sycophantic show.

Instead, he chose to make remarks about Charlie Sheen’s lifestyle, Robert Downey JR’s troubled past and Hugh Heffner’s recent engagement to a 24-year-old.

He said: “I’m confronting the elephant in the room. Like, I’m going to go out there and not talk about the issues in their industry.

“Don’t forget, I’ve got to be an outsider there. I mustn’t come out there as everyone’s mate and schmooze – that’s nauseating. I’ve got to come out there, and I’ve got to roast them.

“If they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me. I don’t think I did anything wrong.

“I’m not going to apologise for being true to myself. My strategy is to make me laugh. If there’s anyone in the world like me, that’s a bonus.”

  1. He was great and his comments were right on! Hollywood is for the most part a bunch of overpaid losers! They should learn to laugh at themselves, everyone else does!

  2. Too right. Everyone knows what Ricky Gervais is about. Stupid Americans shouldn’t have hired him if they can’t handle a decent sense of humour.
