A pensioner who killed his friend after accidentally hitting the accelerator instead of the brakes has walked free from court.
Anthony Dunk, 74, was giving his pal Alex Rennie, 84, a lift to a rugby match when he clipped the back of a parked taxi.
But Anthony then hit the accelerator instead of the brake and the Honda Jazz swerved across the road and hit the corner of a house at 50mph.
Alex died of multiple injuries following the crash in Tavistock, Devon on November 5, 2011.
Retired college tutor Dunk admitted causing the death by driving without due care and attention at Plymouth Crown Court.
Dunk, of Tavistock, was spared jail and given an eight-week curfew, banned from driving for a year and ordered to pay #1,750 fine and costs.
Judge Paul Darlow told him: “You are a man of exemplary character. This is something you will have to come to terms with for the rest of your life.”
Richard Bond, defending, added: ”He will think about Alex Rennie every morning when he gets up and every night when he goes to bed.”
