It is thought 47-year-old Robert Newman is the first man ever to be arraigned outside a court – and certainly the first of its kind for York Crown Court, in its 238 year history. The defendant arrived at The Castle site of the courthouse, in a wheelchair and could not make it up the steps. When his case was called, the Recorder of York Stephen Ashurst agreed with NewmanÃs barrister, Glen Parsons, that the defendant could not possibly make it into the court, which opened its doors in 1777.
