A driving instructor is revving up the glory days of a classic car – by teaching his pupils in a Morris Minor.
Nostalgic Graham Rant decided to ditch the modern comfort of his Ford Fiesta after spotting the cream coloured motor on the market.
But his new Morris Minor 1000 had to be rebuilt by motor experts before it hit the streets, who fitted a host of modifications – including dual controls.
Now the vintage vehicle, complete with red leather interior, is a hit among learner drivers in Taunton, Somerset.
Mr Rant, who runs a franchise for Learner Driver Centres, said: ”I thought at first about getting a Beetle, but then a car dealer said he had a Morris Minor 1000 that I could have.
”It’s a great car for teaching people to drive – there is great visibility and all the controls are nicely laid out.”
The Morris Minor was one of the main cars of choice for driving instructors in the 1970s and 1980s, because they were easy to drive and maintain.
nice 🙂
i’m currently restoring a smoke grey example from 1970 as my first car.
i’m glad this car has finally got the recognition it deserves as a great learner car.
i have considered buying a Mk1 Golf GTi to teach in recently as i’m a VW enthusiast, and it would be a change to my Mk6 Golf i currnetly have.
I’m also LDC Instructor
I learnt to drive in mine. Fantastic little cars. I think it would do lots of young people the power of good to learn in a moggie.
Fantastic idea! I learnt in mine (as well as a new Fiesta diesel) and feel a more in control driver because of it!
