A new device that promises to beat erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, and help men last for up to 12 HOURS in bed could become available on the NHS by 2018.
The gadget, called ‘Stays-Hard’ holds the penis aloft to maintain a “solid” erection, even after orgasm.
It is safe to use with condoms and other varieties of contraceptive, and can be fitted by either partner in just a few seconds.
The device aims to help the estimated 10 million men in the UK with erectile dysfunction, and the seven million others suffering from premature ejaculation.
A lack of sex is blamed for the breakdown of as many as one-in-five relationships.
Though targeted at the 40s-60s, it could also transform the sex lives of many men including the elderly and disabled without the need for invasive surgery.
It could also help the estimated seven per cent of men in their 20s and 11 per cent in their 30s who suffer from erectile dysfunction.
Users are advised to remove the device after 12 hours, though it could be worn – albeit by “more committed and physically fit lovers” – without harm for up to 16 hours continuously.
Existing ‘cock rings’, which maintain erections by severely constricting blood flow away from the penis, should only be worn for 20 minutes at a time.
Stays-Hard took five years of research and was developed in conjunction with urologists and with Professor Peter Ford of De Montfort University.
Despite only just going on sale, its British manufacturer, Tyna International Limited, has already attracted strong interest in commercial distribution to countries including Australia, Canada, South Africa and the Middle East.
And it could be made available on the NHS in as little as 18 months as a “viable alternative” to Viagra, hand pumps and other more costly methods of treating impotence.
It is likely to go on sale over-the-counter in Tesco, Boots and other major retailers in coming months, too.
Richard Wylie, the managing director of Tyna International and a former non-medical partner at a Harley Street clinic, said the Stays-Hard device will bring hope to millions of men seeking prolonged intimacy without pills or surgery.
“Erectile dysfunction is a nightmare situation. When a man loses potency, it’s like he loses his life,” he said.
“Many men decide not to do anything about it. They don’t want to talk about it and their wives or partners think it’s their fault. If untreated it can lead to the break-up of marriages and relationships.
“Stays-Hard has been created for all the millions of guys out there who have got problems. It was patented with them in mind.”
He added: “It is also a fantastic product for those without erectile problems but with an insatiable appetite for lovemaking.”
Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, is an incurable condition that plagues an estimated one-in-10 men worldwide. Experts reckon half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will experience it to some degree.
It is commonly caused by high blood pressure and by diabetes, conditions which narrow the blood vessels going to the penis. Depression, anxiety and relationship problems can also be a trigger.
Whilst surgery is an option, albeit a highly expensive one, most sufferers rely on medication, vacuum pumps or constricting rings to achieve and maintain an erection.
But existing treatments have long been derided. Critics say vacuum pumps do not always work and ruin the spontaneity of sex. Viagra only works in 70-85 per cent of men and causes a string of unpleasant side effects.
And so-called ‘cock-rings’, which are believed to date back to the 12th Century, can only be used for 20 minutes at a time and cause some discomfort to the user’s sexual partner.
Now Tyna International claims to have developed the first ‘catch-all’ solution. After launching Stays-Hard earlier this month, the device – which is available without prescription – sold out within the first 24 hours.
The product, the first of its kind in the UK and made from spring steel and a medical grade thermoplastic tubing, was also shortlisted as a finalist for this year’s Virgin Media VOOM award.
A series of successful case studies in men of all ages demonstrated the device’s ability to maintain a pain-free erection “indefinitely”, even after ejaculation.
Wylie and Dr Neil Barnes, of Medlink East Midlands, are now in talks with the NHS in order to gain Class 1 medical registration and make the device, which can be used for up to six months, available to sufferers on prescription.
They are also in discussions with a number of High Street retailers in the UK, Canada, South Africa, Australia and the Middle East. It currently costs £39.95 and can be bought online at stays-hard.com.
Wylie, 70, who has suffered erectile dysfunction himself following problems with his prostate, said: “I’m not unique. Most men over 40 will notice their erections aren’t as strong as they used to be.
