The National Television awards last night saw Eastenders overcome its recent controversies to emerge triumphant in the Best Soap category once again.
The battle between Eastenders and Coronation Street for the highly-coveted title is always the most eagerly-anticipated moment of the night, and the BBC soap has won the gong eight times in the last ten years.
But recent controversy over the cot death storyline and the hugely-successful Coronation Street tram crash episode meant that competition this year was tough.
As well as the Best Serial Drama gong Eastenders received recognition for its acting talent with Lacey Turner, who plays Stacey Slater, walking away with the Best Serial Drama Performance title.
X Factor picked up the award for Best Talent Show, with Chery Cole, Simon Cowell and Matt Cardle on hand to collect the trophy, and I’m A Celebrity’s Stacey Soloman and Shaun Ryder opened the show with a duet before collecting the award for Best Entertainment Programme.
The Special Recognition award this year went to Strictly Come Dancing host Bruce Forsyth, who was presented with the trophy by last year’s winner Stephen Fry.
Top Gear was named Best Factual Show despite, according to Jeremy Clarkson, having not told a fact in seven years.
Ant & Dec were crowned the Most Popular Entertainment Presenter for a record 10th year in a row and there was an award for the brilliantly puerile comedy The Inbetweeners which picked up the Digital Choice prize.
