A group of lads made the most of traffic misery yesterday when a motorway was closed in both directions – with a game of RUGBY.
The men abandoned their cars in nose-to-tail traffic on the northbound carriageway of the M5 and stepped over the barrier into the empty southbound side.
They got a rugby ball and started throwing it around while they waited for the road to be re-opened through Somerset.
Photographer Lawrie Richardson, 31, who took the photo near junction 25 at Taunton said: “It struck me as typically British.
“They made the most of the situation by having a game of rugby to pass the time.”
Police closed the M5 in both directions due to concerns for a woman on a motorway bridge.
It was shut southbound between junctions 26 and 27 and northbound at junction 27 and long tailbacks built up.
Avon and Somerset police said: “The incident is already leading to tailbacks on the motorway in both directions.
“We would urge people to be patient and stay safe and remain in their cars.
“If possible seek an alternative route while we deal with the incident.”
The closure, which lasted more than two hours, caused 20-mile tailbacks in both directions.
Some of the trapped motorists set up deckchairs by the side of the road.
And one popular driver unloading a portable toilet from his trailer and put it on the roadside for people to use.
Other photos taken by motorists showed one man cycling alongside stopped cars.
Others played frisbee and took their dogs for a walk.
Police re-opened the motorway in both directions around 12.45pm and said the woman on the bridge was now “safe and well”.
