A banned driver has been jailed after she was caught without insurance and two times over the limit – as she collected her child from school.
Donna Finch, 45, gave a breath test reading of 65 mcgs of alcohol in 100 mls of breath, almost double the 35 mcgs limit, when police pulled her over.
After checking her license and registration they found she had been disqualified from driving for a previous offence and had no insurance.
Fenland Magistrate’s Court heard she drank steadily during the day before driving to pick up her child from school on 19 November this year.
John Clarke, defending, told the court that alcohol had become ”entrenched” in Finch’s daily routine.
He said: ”She had been sleeping on the sofa after having something to drink and she had to collect her child from school.
”She rushed out to the garage, and drove to collect her child. This is not some youth who got drunk, she is a middle-aged lady where alcohol has become entrenched.
Finch, who was already subject to an alcohol treatment order, pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without insurance and driving while disqualified.
This placed her in breach of a 20-week suspended sentence given in October for offences including failing to give a breath test, assault and causing criminal damage
Magistrates activated 18 weeks of her suspended sentence and gave her an additional eight-week sentence for the latest offences.
Pleading for Finch’s freedom, Mr Clarke added: ”If she goes to prison she will come out and will be in the same position as she was before.
”There is not doubt she has an alcohol problem. Her alcohol treatment programme had not really started when she was caught driving while disqualified.”
Finch was also handed a new three year driving ban.
