They may look like a cross between ET and a Gremlin, but these bald Sphynx cats are fetching up to £3,000 a time as the latest must-have pet.

The odd-looking wrinkly felines are a rare breed which have only recently found their way to England in the last few years.

They are perfect for asthma sufferers or those who are sick of cleaning fur from their furniture.

Pam Williams, secretary of the Sphynx Cat Association, said the animals are becoming increasingly popular as pets.

She added: ”They’re a bit like Marmite – you either love them or hate them.

”Since they have been officially recognised as a breed in 2005, they have become more and more popular.

”They have a brilliant temperament and are almost more like a dog than a cat. They play fetch and are extremely loyal.

”During summer, owners need to be very aware of the sun and ideally, use suncream to protect them as they burn very quickly.”

Sphynx’s normally live between nine and 15 years and are known for snuggling up to other breeds and their owners to keep warm.

New owner Paul Reed, 40, from Bristol, said: ”They might look a little strange but they have a great temperament, although I imagine they might need a hug in the winter.

”Thankfully, it’s not been too hot yet, but I imagine they may need a liberal coating of sun cream when the sun finally does come out.”
