A husband was jailed today for stabbing his dog to death after it bit him on the bottom as he argued with his wife, a court heard.
Angry Anthony Cockrell, 51, was rowing with wife Jacqueline, 46, when he became aggressive and threatened her with violence.
Their pet dog springer spaniel Ozzy then tried to defend her and sank its teeth into his behind, a court heard.
But dock worker Cockrell, of Penryn, Cornwall, picked up a nine-inch carving knife and stabbed the eight-year-old dog to death.
Cockrell pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal at an earlier hearing.
He was jailed for 18 weeks at Truro Magistrates Court and was disqualified from keeping animals for life.
Speaking before the hearing, Jacqueline, who is divorcing him, said: ”My dog bled to death. It was horrendous. I still haven’t been able to get any closure.
”He’d had a drink and was not a very calm man. I don’t want to talk to him and I don’t want to see him.”
The attack happened in in July in front of the couple’s two sons, aged 17 and 19, leaving the animal with ”multiple” wounds and dying in a pool of blood.
Mr Cockrell claimed to be suffering from post-traumatic stress after fighting in the Falklands War.
A police spokesman said: ”It’s been disturbing for everyone involved.”
