A homeless man has been ordered to pay £50 compensation to the police after he damaged a cell bed – by EATING it.
David Amies, 50, munched on the foam mattress after he was arrested for drinking in Worcester town centre on January 13.
Local magistrates ordered him to pay West Mercia Police £50 in compensation to replace the chewed bed.
Matt Dodson, prosecuting, told the court officers discovered Amies with the mattress in his mouth after they went to check on him.
He said: ”The mattress was taken away and inspected and it was found to have a one centimetre hole.”
Amies pleaded guilty to criminal damage and being drunk and disorderly when he appeared at court on Thursday.
He was ordered to pay £50 compensation and fined £10 for being drunk and disorderly.
He also has to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £15 in court costs.
