The world’s most expensive whisky has sold at auction for £288,000.
A bottle of 64-year-old Macallan malt whisky in a bespoke Lalique crystal decanter was sold during a charity auction at Sotheby’s New York.
It is described as the oldest and rarest Macallan ever bottled by the distillery and was auctioned off to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rene Lalique, the founder of one of the world’s most foremost crystal artisans.
The malt whisky had its public unveiling on April 6th in Paris. Macallan took it on a world tour to a number of famous cities where samples would be auctioned off for charity.
David Cox, director of fine and rare whiskies for The Macallan, said: “We have had a phenomenal response to this very special and rare decanter.
“We are absolutely thrilled with the result of last night’s auction which has smashed the world record for the most expensive whisky ever sold.
“It was wonderful to experience the culmination of this incredible project, which has made its way around the world to raise a staggering $600,000 (£373,000) for charity.”
The money raised is being donated to charity:water – an organisation dedicated to providing people in developing countries with clean, safe drinking water.
