Ajax have set Liverpool a deadline of Saturday to agree a fee for Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez.
The Dutch giants are reported to want £21 million for the 24-year-old who shone on the major stage at the 2010 World Cup.
But as yet, Liverpool have only offered £12.8 million for the hot-tempered South American – who BIT a rival player earlier this season.
Ajax boss Frank de Boer said: “Liverpool know what they have to pay and we are sticking to our guns.
“We want to know by 29th January, after that nothing more will happen.”
Liverpool fans are anxious for the club to sign the frontman as a partner for Fernando Torres with the Spaniard the club’s only source of firepower up front.
Yesterday’s sale of Dutch winger Ryan Babel and Serbian Milan Jovanovic’s expected departure add to the urgency for Reds boss Kenny Dalglish to strengthen the front line.
Meanwhile, the Anfield club, who face Fulham tonight, are continuing to play hard ball with Blackpool as they look to sign the Seasider’s influential playmaker Charlie Adam.
