Former Liverpool owner George Gillett thought captain Steven Gerrard was gay, according to an explosive new book.
The American, whose controversial co-ownership with Tom Hicks ended last year, thought Gerrard’s partner Alex was a man – and not a striking blonde.
Gillett then contacted Hicks and said: “Tom, there’s something you need to know. Our team captain is gay.”
The bizarre revelation comes from Brian Reade’s new book, An Epic Swindle: 44 Months With A Pair Of Cowboys.
Reade’s book tells the story of how the two American owners disastrous tenure took Liverpool to the brink of bankruptcy.
Hicks and Gillett bought Liverpool in 2006 with the promise of a new stadium and large transfer funds for manager Rafa Benitez.
But the affair turned sour after promise were broken and boardroom battles went public in a ‘very un-Liverpool’ fashion.
The duo’s controversial ownership came to an end in October 2010 when Fenway Sports Group, headed up by fellow American John W. Henry, bought Liverpool for a fee thought to be in the region of £300 million.
