A group of Oxford students returned home from a drunken night out in their first week at university with an unusual ‘trophy’ — a TRAMP.
The kind-hearted students invited 44-year-old homeless person Bryn back to their shared flat on a cold night so he could eat and have a good night’s sleep.
Grateful Bryn – who has been sleeping rough for 19 years – was so bowled over by their generosity he made them all cheese toasties AND cleaned the entire flat before he left.
Media and Communication fresher Theodora Vida started talking to Bryn outside a club after a heavy drinking session in Oxford.
The Oxford Brookes first year and her flatmates invited him back to their flat and bedded him down for the night in the communal lounge.
Speaking to student newspaper The Tab, Theodora, 20, said: “Bryn told me he’d been homeless for 19 years and I just felt bad for him.
“It was a cold night and I saw it fitting to invite him to ours for the night. I also gave him a towel to have a shower and a pillow to sleep on.”
The hungover students woke to find Bryn had cleaned the entire flat – which had been ‘ransacked’ by the six excitable students in just five days – and made cheese toasties.
Another flatmate, Publishing Media fresher Rhydian Evans was okay with the tramp coming to spend the night because he was drunk too.
Rhydian, 18, from Aberystwyth, said: “He was a really nice guy – he even made us cheese toasties.
“We just sat up and chatted with him really – he left us a note on a bottle of wine he’d brought, but by the time we woke up the next day he was gone.
“We hadn’t been at university for a week, but it’s definitely going to be something I’ll remember for a while.
“Students are meant to come home with traffic cones and road signs, not homeless people.”
Fellow flatmate Tom Green was less than impressed to find a surprise visitor when he returned from a different night out.
Tom, 19, said: “I came in at around 6am and started making sardines on toast.
“Once I finished my snack I spotted a sleeping bag with a pair of Union Jack socks sticking out the bottom.
“I asked him who he was and he replied ‘mate they said I could stay’. I offered to put him on the porch and make him a toastie.
“He said he’d already eaten all our bread, cheese, a chicken breast and one egg so he wasn’t hungry.
“He said he’d tidied the kitchen so he should be allowed to stay.
“I went to bed and when I woke up again at 11am and Bryn was up. I went back to bed and he must have left while we were asleep.
“We later found a signed bottle of Cream 15 per cent wine which said ‘From Bryn with love?.”
Charitable Theodora added: “I still think it was an okay thing to do despite what one of my flatmates said about it.
“He also contacted me yesterday over the phone. It was a strange but heart-warming experience.”
