The iPhone has been named the ‘Coolest Thing on the Planet’.
A study of 3,000 Brits saw the high-tech gadget top the poll, beating the internet, Sky+ and social networking website Facebook.
Since the first model was launched in 2007, the iPhone has been flying off the shelves, with the new iPhone 4 selling almost two million in the first three days on sale.
Second place went to Apple, the brainchild of Steve Jobs, while the World Wide Web was voted third.
Apple’s music player, the iPod, was at number four while the Aston Martin DB9 completed the top five.
The study was carried out by Costa Coffee to mark the launch of its new Iced Cold range of summer drinks and has revealed some interesting insight into what the nation rates as being cool.
Cadbury’s chocolate came sixth in the poll followed by Sky+, which ensures people never have to miss their favourite television show.
Auction website eBay was seventh, while mobile phones and Facebook completed the top ten.
Kevin Hydes, Costa’s UK Head of Marketing and spokesperson for the Ice Cold Costa range, said: ”It’s been interesting seeing what the nation deems to be cool. It’s no surprise gadgets like the iPhone and supercars like the Aston Martin DB9 feature highly.
”However, it’s refreshing to see more humble items such as Cadburys chocolate, Sky+ and Facebook rate so highly. Lego has even been voted as being cooler than James Bond.
”For those who can’t stretch to the likes of an Audi R8, a taste of cool can be had at Costa with our new Ice Cold range of drinks – they’re cool, refreshing, and a lot lighter on the pocket.”
But the iPhone wasn’t the only gadget to feature in the poll, with the Nintendo Wii at number 16 while the much-hyped iPad, which saw queues of people outside stores when it was launched last month, could only manage 17th, behind Google Earth (11th) and GHD hair straightners (14th).
And it seems the current financial situation has had an effect with budget conscience consumers rating Primark (50th) and Topshop (86th) ahead of designer brands such as Dolce & Gabbana (98th).
Even the humble Mini Cooper (27th), VW Camper Van (30th) and VW Beetle (45th) have been voted above the more glamourous Lamborghini Diablo (49th) and Ferrari Enzo (72nd).
Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp (21st) was named the coolest celebrity of all time, with David Beckham (33rd) and Michael Jackson (37th) making up the top 3.
However, the former England Captain and King of Pop were beaten by the Dyson vacuum cleaner (32nd) and the BBC’s Top Gear programme (29th).
And the nations’ sweetheart, Cheryl Cole (48th) and Geordie double-act, Ant & Dec (52nd) were voted cooler than John Lennon (59th), Barack Obama (64th) and Beyonce (68th).
Fashion was also a common theme in the top 100 coolest things on the planet with Christina Louboutin stilettos at 46 and Calvin Klein underwear at 66.
Kevin Hydes added: ”It’s encouraging to see that such a diverse range of celebrities have made it in to the cool poll. Appearances from Barack Obama and Ant and Dec prove you don’t have to be a rock god or footballer to be seen as cool.”
”It’s also a sign of the times to see that Cheryl Cole beats the likes of John Lennon.”
