A grandmother inadvertently spent an eye-watering £71.50 on a single loaf of bread.
Gran Deborah Johnston, 52, didn’t realise she had splashed out on the expensive bloomer from Asda until after she’d paid the bill on January 22.
It wasn’t until her daughter Lauren Draper, 26, checked the receipt did she notice the mistake sum.
Thankfully staff at Asda refunded her the huge sum for the bread, which should have cost just £1.10.
Deborah, from Stevenage, Herts., said: “I buy the same food every week on my grocery shop so couldn’t understand why it was so expensive.
“When I showed the receipt to my daughter she said to me ‘mum you paid more than £70 for a loaf of bread!’
“We had a good laugh about it and went to the customer services desk. Even the cashier was laughing and saying she hoped the loaf was gold-plated.”
Deborah, a mother of four, and wife to William, 62, said she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 which left her struggling to process numbers.
She said: “I always take my daughter shopping with me because after the brain aneurysm I struggle to process figures properly and have short term memory loss.
“We were nearing the checkout when Lauren needed to run and pick something up.
“I said I’d be fine and got my cash out ready to pay, when the bill was miles over what it normally is.
“I paid with my debit card and waited for her to come back for her to look over the receipt.
“She could see that I had got flustered and asked if I was ok, before seeing the £71.50 half way down the receipt.
“I think the funny thing is that this would never happen to anyone else except me, I’m just glad Lauren noticed it.
They gave me a £2 loyalty card as compensation.”
A spokesperson for Asda said: “We agree that is a lot of dough for a loaf of bread, but we are happy that our colleagues spotted this and refunded Ms Johnston straight away.”
