Liverpool and Newcastle United fans were filmed this week burning shirts with Fernando Torres and Andy Carroll’s names and numbers on the back.
Torres had made the £50 million move to Chelsea from Liverpool with the Reds forking out £35 million for Newcastle’s Carroll as a replacement.
Fans from both clubs were deeply disappointed with two men they idolised.
For some, the prospect of wearing the shirts of their defected heroes was a positive no-no – leaving them out of pocket with a useless strip.
But don’t burn the shirts, use them as rags or throw them out with the rubbish.
Paddy Power is offering a £50 bet for each official replica shirt with either Torres 9 or Carroll 9 on the back.
The bookmaker will then give the shirts to Oxfam who will give send them to Africa to help those less fortunate.
Liverpool Legend John Aldridge, who yesterday labelled Fernando Torres a fraud following his controversial departure, is supporting the campaign.
The striker, who scored 63 times in just 104 appearances for the Reds said: “Torres’ departure will have upset many fans.
“And those who shelled out for a Liverpool shirt with Torres’ name on it will now also be feeling a little poorer too.
“So it is great news Paddy Power has a silver lining to the Torres transfer heartache and offered anyone with a shirt a £50 free bet.”
Paddy Power added: “We know the pain fans will have been through after their favourite players have left the club, so we wanted to give them something back. Whilst it can’t turn back the clock it can at least ease the wallet.”
The deal applies to official Liverpool and Newcastle shirts with Torres 9 and Carroll 9 on the back.
