We’re living in unpredictable and uncertain times. The Brexit process, Donald Trump’s unique presidency, a trade war and the prominence of North Korea are all the sorts of moment that, on their own, could define an era but, remarkably, are all happening at once.
Indeed, big stories such a snap election in Japan or the dual citizenship saga in Australia barely registered in the UK, where Brexit and Trump have provided more than enough fodder to keep the 24-hour new cycle busy.
But what is the impact of such a dramatic political scene?
Forex market experts DailyFX has looked at 59 key dates between April 2017 and April 2018 for six world leaders – US President Donald Trump, UK Prime Minister Theresa May, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker. It also looks at the Google search interest in the six leaders on the dates in question.
The interactive guide allows you to see the moments where the interest is high but the currency impact is low or vice versa. It shows, for example, how the Dollar performed strongly when Trump entered into a war of words with Kim Jong-un but dropped when he kick-started a trade war with China.
