This is the smelly moment firefighters tackled 100 tonnes – of exploding HORSE MANURE.
The fire broke out when a tractor pulling a muck spreader exploded into a fire-ball coating the farmer head-to-toe in stinking horse poo.
Flames engulfed the manure-covered field sending thick brown smoke into the air and a pungent pong wafting into nearby homes and businesses.
Twenty firefighters using breathing equipment spent three hours tackling the blaze which broke out in a field near Nuneaton, Warks.
Residents were forced to close their windows for 24 hours after the ”atrocious stench” lingered after the blaze was put out.
Retired accountant Robert Angus, 64, said: ”Something was in the air and it wasn’t pleasant.
”The smell from muck spreading is always bad but this was ten times worse. It was like someone had roasted. The atrocious stench was almost unbearable.”
Another resident added: ”I thought somebody had let off a giant stink bomb over the area. I stayed inside and covered my nostrils with a handkerchief.”
Firefighters rushed to the blaze shortly after it broke out at 2pm. They had to wade through 2ft deep muck to bring the blaze under control.
A spokesman for Warwickshire Fire and Rescue said: ”We believe the cause of the fire was electrical.
”However, the tractor was pulling a muck spreader when it first started so we were up to or boots in muck.”
