Florence Thackwell, 16, who was charged with 'Soliciting' and was fined in 1908. See NTI story NTIVICE. These are some of the earliest surviving police mugshots of twentieth century prostitutes. The incredible custody shots, taken between 1908 and 1911 and accompanied with scrawled notes about their crimes have been unearthed in the West Midlands Police archives. Police in Birmingham were the first force in the world to take mugshots with the first snapped crook in 1853. Prisoners would be dressed in nice clothing and marched down street to the photography studio where their mugshots were taken. The photography studio would be used my members of the public too as it would be only opportunity to get a lasting portrait of themselves or family.
