A family who waged a year-long legal battle against Tesco over a £20 note were celebrating today when the supermarket giant awarded them £250.
Victorious Shaun Collins, 51, took on the might of Britain’s biggest retailer to clear his son Gareth’s name after managers accused him of lying about a £20 note.
Gareth claimed a self-service checkout till at the Tesco store in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, swallowed the note and did not register it in April last year.
He asked staff to check the machine but managers were adamant their machines did not make mistakes and refused to give him his money back.
But after a year of wrangling by solicitors on behalf of the family, Tesco have settled the case with a £250 out-of-court payment – and paid all of their legal bills.
Former Tesco worker Shaun, who lives in Wells, Somerset, said: “We are just so relieved it is over.
“And it is a great relief for my son as they were basically making him out to be a liar. It has cleared his name at last.”
