A lorry driver had a ‘miracle escape’ when he suffered just cuts and bruises – after his 16-tonne truck FLIPPED over in a freak motorway crash.
The driver lost control of the huge 12-wheel lorry which careered off the carriageway before thundering down a 50ft embankment and rolling over in a field.
Rescue crews rushed to the scene of the crash which happened at junction 12 of the northbound M40 near Warwick at 10.15am on Monday.
Amazingly, the driver survived when the cab became the only part of the vehicle not to be crushed.
He was treated for minor injuries after scrambling out of the wreckage.
Shocked motorist Jason Groves, 34, who was a few cars behind the lorry when it crashed, said: “I couldn’t believe it, the driver just seemed to swerve off the road.
“I really don’t know what caused it, there was no ice on the road but the way he went off made it seem like there was, I’ve never seen anything like it.
“The sound when it crashed was like a bomb going off, it looked like carnage.
“As soon as he went down that embankment I thought he was a goner, but to hear he survived is amazing, it is a miracle.
“That lorry was huge, I stopped on the hard shoulder as quite a lot of people did when the ambulance arrived we saw the man walk out of the lorry.
“I really couldn’t believe my eyes, he is so lucky to not be hurt, like I said, everyone thought he was dead.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find a lorry that had left the motorway, travelled down an embankment, through a fence and overturned in a field.
“The lorry driver, a man in his 40s, had got himself out of the lorry and received treatment at the scene for minor injuries including a laceration to his back.
“He was transferred by ambulance to Warwick Hospital for further treatment.
“Considering the nature of the crash and the damage to the HGV the driver was extremely lucky not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries.”
