A disabled gran today told how she was “a prisoner in her own home” because her wheelchair is too WIDE to get out of her front door.
Desperate Jenny Rigby, 67, is unable to stand due to crippling arthritis, but the doors in her home are 3ins narrower than her wheelchair.
Miss Rigby has only left the house once when she was taken to hospital on a stretcher after collapsing at her housing association home in 2010.
The gran-of-two was forced into a wheelchair when she fell down a flight of stairs in 1977.
The former nurse was paralysed from the waist down for months.
Her condition improved but she was left in a wheelchair because of arthritis.
She suffers from rheumatoid arthritis in both arms and knees as well as osteoporosis and asthma.
It means she is no longer able to stand up to fold her wheelchair to get out of the door of her home in Bestwood, Nottingham.
She has asked Nottingham City Homes to widen the door but they have refused and say they are trying to find her a new home with suitable disabled access.
She said: “I feel like a prisoner in my own home, I have no way of getting out.
“I feel like I’ve been abandoned. I have had my bathroom door taken off to give me more room as I used to barely be able to shut it because of my wheelchair.
“My wheelchair is about three inches wider than the door which means I can’t get out of the front door.
“The closest I come is stretching my feet out so they cross the doorway.
“It’s horrible, all I see are these same four walls day after day.”
Bestwood councillor Brian Grocock said: “Nottingham City Homes have been trying to find a suitable home for Miss Rigby, but the fact she needs one with a wide doorway is proving tricky. Hopefully the situation can be resolved quickly.”
